Out in January 2014:
FOXY PAPERS September 1966 - August 1967 Original press cuttings • Volume #1 Always wanted to have all those Jimi Hendrix articles from the music press bound in a nice volume? For the first time this book presents an almost complete collection of press clippings from the day Jimi Hendrix set foot on British soil in September 1966, until the day he returned to England after his first visit to the USA, late August 1967. Hendrix archivist Ben Valkhoff has compiled this book from his private collection, with the help of generous friends. This publication – volume #1 of a set of four volumes – brings you 218 pages of extensive interviews with Jimi Hendrix, comments by his peers, concert advertisements and reviews, record company promo ads, and many photos – some in color as they originally appeared in the music press. Foxy Papers contains over 550 scanned images of music press clippings from the United Kingdom, USA, and many European countries. Not transcriptions, but scanned images of the actual published articles. Especially for this publication almost all of the European articles have been translated into English. These translated articles include rare press clippings from The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. HOW CAN I ORDER? Early January you will receive information on how to order your copy of Foxy Papers. The ‘sign in’ option is used as this project is a ‘print on demand’ production, so only a limited number of copies will be printed for those who actually order. This is a ‘for friends and fans only’ publication, and will not be commercially released and/or available. (Please note that further volumes will be taken into production depending on public demand for this book.) Price: 19,95 euro + shipping. Pages: 218 Size: 210 x 297 mm [A4] Full color cover Printed in black and white and color Number of color pages: xx Number of images: ± 550 More info and samples here: http://www.jimihendrix-lifelines.net/styled-374/index.html |

JIMI HENDRIX WÄRE HEUTE 71...! ! ! (Jimi Hendrix 1942-1970) Eckhard B. ...with the power of soul, anything is possible.....j.h.

A reaction from PAUL MCCARTNEY to the TELEGRAM !!! Thanks to french journalist, Paola Génone (from l'Express, weekly magazine) who met him last October 1st regarding his coming record :-) :-) :-) http://www.lexpress.fr/culture/musique/videos-mccartney-hendrix-le-rendez-vous-manque_1289494.html Here is the translation : On the 21st of October 1969, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and the drummer Tony Williams sent a telegram to Paul McCartney (who was a big fan of Jimi). "We are recording and LP together this weekend in New York - STOP - How about coming in to play bass - STOP - Peace - Jimi Hendrix Miles Davies (sic) Tony Williams." On October 22, Peter Brown, who worked for the Beatles' record label, replied on behalf of Paul: "Ref. cable received from Hendrix, Davies and Williams. Paul McCartney away from London on holiday, not expected to return for two weeks." When the ex-Beatle was later shown the telegram, he was stunned "Am I dreaming? Is it a joke? Where did you find that?" The documents come from Yazid Manou, the French Hendrix specialist, who discovered them while researching on the web-sites of The Hard Rock Café. One document is at Key West (Florida 2005) and the other in Prague (Czech Republic 2012). "How is this possible? Jimi! Jimi wanted to play with me and I find out now? Why?" McCartney suddenly realized that October 21, 1969 had been a special day: "An american radio had just announced that I was dead and it had spread worldwide. The Beatles were in a difficult period. I went to my house in Scotland and I didn't want to be joined... so, I never got this telegram. I was dreaming to play with Jimi. We knew each other. I remember having seen him playing at The Speakeasy Club, in London, in 1966 : Jimi was astonishing, breathless, impossible to categorise. I remember that he had played his famous version of "Hey Joe" and a song of Howlin' Wolf. I have never played with him; I thought that we would have all the time in the world. And he died one year after; he was 27. When, in 1967, I was one of the art directors of the Monterey Festival, I got him invited." Unknown in the USA, Hendrix exploded onto the scene, thanks to that concert. "What could Jimi, Miles, Tony and I have done in a studio ? I know I would have rather played guitar than bass... or both. Jimi had no limits. He brought together psychedelic rock, electric blues, gospel... and his technique remains matchless. For 40 years, I recalled his genius in pretty all of my concerts." Evidently moved, McCartney adds "It is at the same time my biggest missed opportunity and also a great news... an inspiration to write new songs". |

APOLLO - Kino , Hannover proudly presents:
Film: Jimi & Das Fehmarn-Festival Deutschland 2010; Regie: Rasmus Gerlach, Wolfgang Neitzel, Paul Kulms; 93 Min. Hendrix home tape for sale, shows "softer" side
By Mike Collett-White LONDON (Reuters) - A home recording by Jimi Hendrix, which its owners said showed the 1960s rock icon's softer side, will be auctioned next month and is expected to fetch between 50,000 and 100,000 pounds ($70-140,000). According to co-owner Mark Sutherland, the tape was recorded by Hendrix in New York in 1968 and then taken to Britain. Carl Niekirk worked in a photography studio below Hendrix's central London residence where, because there was only one entrance to the building, he often doubled as doorman for his famous neighbor, letting in guests including George Harrison. "I don't know how the tapes got from New York to London, but they must have been important if he took them with him," Sutherland said. "Hendrix ended up in London above where Carl worked. Carl kept getting disturbed by people, and said 'a favor for a favor' ... and Jimi gave him two tapes." Sutherland said a friend met Niekirk in a pub several years ago and bought the tape from him "for a nominal fee." He is not sure what happened to the second recording. Since then the tape's new owners have been in legal dispute with the Hendrix estate, and Sutherland said he was now finally able to auction it. Hendrix's estate was not immediately available for comment. Sutherland and Ted Owen, managing director of pop memorabilia auctioneer the Fame Bureau which is handling the April 28 online auction, are confident the tape is genuine. "It's pretty obvious," Owen told Reuters. "I have listened to nearly every outtake of Jimi Hendrix and am very familiar with the personal reels. Thirty seven are known to exist, but now only one is out there in the public domain." Sutherland said the tape featured 14 tracks, including Hendrix performing Bob Dylan track "Tears of Rage." Hendrix famously covered Dylan with "All Along the Watchtower." "His playing is unique but there are a lot of Hendrix clones," said Sutherland, who is a record producer. "As soon as he started singing, though, that was it. There is a Dylan song on there in an acoustic and folksy-type style that no-one's heard. It is away from Jimi's wildness and blues." The tape includes tracks from the 1968 album "Electric Ladyland" and features Hendrix singing and playing the guitar as well as an unidentified harmonica player. |

Jimi Hendrix Live at Cologne CD The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live In Cologne, originally the twelfth release in the Dagger Records official bootleg series released as an LP and now on CD, documents this spirited, January 13, 1969 performance at the Sporthalle in Cologne, Germany. Hendrix kicked off the proceedings with a scalding "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" from Electric Ladyland. This Earl King chestnut had long been a favorite of Jimi's and here he began with a driving solo introduction before signaling Redding and Mitchell to join. Next followed a blistering version of "Foxey Lady," a perennial stage favorite. An abrupt tape cut precedes a memorable rendition of "Red House." Thankfully the performance is essentially complete lacking only Jimi's prefacing stage banter, offered as he likely changed guitars before starting. "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" followed next, not yet established as Jimi's closing number as it would become later in 1969 and remain so throughout his career, but no less muscular. Jimi then shifted directly into "Fire" and then a thunderous "Spanish Castle Magic." The Experience were clearly locked in sync, pushing each other throughout all to the delight of their audience. The Experience never backed off, launching next into their first single "Hey Joe." Jimi had to do some quick tuning on the fly, but he pressed on undaunted, boldly dashing off a lick from the Beatles" "I Feel Fine" as he barreled through this uptempo rendition. This driving intensity built up after the solo, underscored by Jimi's rhythm guitar work and Mitchell"s superb drumming before culminating in a rousing finale. Pre Order from Authentic Hendrix |

JIMI HENDRIX: INTERVIEWS AND REVIEWS 1967-1971
Edited by Ian Douglas Douglas Books / Amazon Digital Services ISBN 978-0-9474014 Kindle digital edition only (220 kb) 78 pages 2012 $3.25 While Hendrix historian Steve Roby presented the exhaustive 364-page Hendrix On Hendrix: Interviews and Encounters with Jimi Hendrix offering nearly five dozen article reprints with commentary tracing Hendrix history, Amazon appears to offer up the poor man's version with the Ian Douglas compiled Interviews and Reviews 1967-1971 with a digital download only Kindle edition volume. The Douglas edition is a collection of 14 archival interviews and reviews from 1967 until 1971 that amount to a chronology of the Hendrix's musical and personal development. Drawing from interviews Hendrix gave to Melody Maker, New Musical Express, Detroit Free Press and more, the book tries to trace his development from a fast-rising opening act to a veteran artist who had seemingly grown disenchanted with certain aspects of his career. While the articles are presented in chronological order and chaptered by year, there are at most four articles from any given year that piecemeal the Hendrix history. Douglas offers no editorial commentary to tie the articles together, simply presents reprints of the originals. Still, it's fascinating to get these time capsules and hear Jimi's thoughts in his own words. The most interesting thing about the book from a historical standpoint is that it contains Hendrix' entire, unabridged final interview from Sept. 11, 1970. He died just a week later, and that last public chat reveals him as a little indecisive about future plans and at loose ends on musical directions. While Hendrix speaks outright about the situations and circumstances around him at the time, he often reflects with hesitancy and with an apprehentiveness about his guitar prowess, songwriting talent and public impact. Here's a quick overview of the articles included: 4/15/67 ' Melody Maker ' Who Says Jimi Can't Sing by Chris Welch Chris talks to Jimi about 'Hey Joe', the Walker Brothers tour, his American-style showmanship and playing guitar 5/13/67 ' New Musical Express ' Question Time with Jimi Hendrix by Keith Altham Keith interviews Jimi on topics such as the Walker Brothers tour, his emergence as a star talking about his music and record chart influences 8/28/67 ' Detroit Free Press ' Frantic-Yet Somehow Casual by Loraine Alterman Review of Experience appearance at the Fifth Dimension Club in Ann Arbor 9/9/67 ' New Musical Express ' Hendrix Admits Lamp is a Bit Smoky by Keith Altham Hendrix had just returned to England, talks about success and happiness and his the media reputation and image 1/20/68 ' Rolling Stone ' A Shoddy Hendrix Record by Michael Lydon Discusses release of Curtis Knight album at this stage of career 3/68 ' New York Times ' The Black Elvis by Michael Lydon Talk of concerts and perspectives, image of sexuality and being heralded as 'the black Elvis' 7/27/68 ' New Musical Express ' Jimi Brings Manager's New Club Roof Down by Keith Altham Altham follows the Experience on a holiday in Spain, the Experience appearance at the opening of manager Mike Jeffrey's nightclub. 11/5/68 ' The Guardian ' Jimi Hendrix in Ladyland by Geoffrey Cannon Takes a look at the release of Electric Ladyland, actually calling it 'boring.' 2/69 ' Hullabaloo & Circus ' Interview by Jacoba Atlas This is a two part interview. The first part appeared in Hullabaloo magazine. Then the publication changed it's name to Circus where the second part of the interview was published. Jimi discusses musical categories, Electric Ladyland, comparisons of London versus New York and future plans 3/1/69 ' Melody Maker ' Royal Albert Hall by Chris Welch Welch analyzes the present state of the music and persona of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and their maturation beyond the 'wild man of pop' image 11/15/69 ' Rolling Stone ' I Don't Want To Be A Clown Anymore by Sheila Weller Shortly after Life magazine published the photo essay portraying Hendrix as a 'rock demigod,' Weller travelled with Hendrix to upstate New York for the Shokan House rehearsal for Woodstock and delve into the personal side of Hendrix as he discusses how he cherishes real friends and the progression of his music. 9/11/70 ' The Final Interview by Keith Altham An edited version of this interview appeared in the 10/70 issue of Record Mirror. This is the complete transcript of that interview that took place at Jimi's Cumberland Hotel flat. As they discuss topics such as the Isle of Wight appearance and the festival scene and concert prices, how Jimi's persona has become much more subdued and how he no longer wants it to be a visual thing. Altham prods into thoughts on Jimi's songwriting and what the future holds, thoughts on changing the world to make it a better place, the categorization of music, etc. 9/19/70 ' The Times ' Obituary Jimi's obituary written the day after he died so basic biographical overview with no depth on manner of death 3/71 ' Oz ' The Cry Of Love by Charles Shaar Murray Reviews the posthumous album release Cry Of Love, calling it 'beautiful.' Interviews and Reviews 1967-1971 is probably a necessary read for Hendrix completists. At $3.25, it's certainly less expensive than the latest magazine touting the newest Hendrix work or historical perspective. It's unfortunate it is only available in a digital edition and not a print copy for library and archiving purposes as digital files are easy to lose and misplace in a library situation. You can download at: http://www.amazon.com/Jimi-Hendrix-Interviews-Reviews-ebook/dp/B009WPZXB0#_ |

ALAN DOUGLAS BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN 'After the death of Jimi Hendrix in 1970, production of the Jimi Hendrix musical legacy was put in the hands of Alan Douglas. Douglas had befriended Hendrix during his New York days. Already known as a renowned jazz producer from his work with the United Artists label and his own Douglas Records, his path crossed with Hendrix in the studio. Douglas was producing guitarist John McLaughlin (ironically Buddy Miles on drums), convinced Hendrix to sit in on sessions with The Last Poets, and opened the door to introduce Hendrix to the avant garde New York jazz circle. There were claims Douglas was actually in negotiation to take over management of Hendrix at the time he died. Which ultimately lead to Jimi's father Al granting Douglas the opportunity to control Jimi's musical heritage. That was until 1993. What turned out to be an ill-advised decision by Douglas and attorney Leo Branton to sell the publishing rights to the Hendrix catalog, upsetting the Hendrix family who filed suite to regain control of the rights to Jimi's music. But as part of the settlement, Douglas was able to retain rights to a biographical book entitled Room Full of Mirrors (not to be confused with the Charles Cross authored 2005 Hendrix biography), and partially completed film documentary of the same title. Part of the wording of the settlement gave the Hendrix family some degree of approval of the final product. 'Ultimately, Experience Hendrix rejected Room Full of Mirrors in its current form and requested that Mr. Douglas make certain specified changes. Notably, one of the aspects asked to be changed was the first-person narrative structure of the documentary.' Douglas refused and in 1997, a portion of the settlement agreement was modified to allow Douglas to proceed with the project, also noting that the Hendrix family would not have the right produce anything 'which is similar in form or substance.' I n 2010, Experience Hendrix produced the project Voodoo Child, a Hendrix video biography allowing Bootsy Collins to be the voice of Hendrix in a first-person narrative style that was released as part of the 2010 box set West Coast Seattle Boy. Douglas felt this was a material breach of the 1997 settlement. Douglas demanded the matter be put forward to arbitration. So we once again find Douglas and the Hendrix family back in court in front of Judge Thomas Zilly in the United States District Court in Seattle. On June 12 or 2012, the court decision was handed down by United States District Judge Ricardo Martinez finding in Douglas' favor (Arbitration Order Case C93-537-TSZ-RSM filed 6/20/12 in the United States District Court Western District of Washington at Seattle). 'There is no question in the Court's mind that Voodoo Child is similar, in both form and substance,' going on to note, 'in both films, an actor was fired to read excerpts of letters and notes and interviews that Jimi produced during his lifetime as a voiceover while images of Jimi's concerts, contemporaries, and Jimi himself are shown in roughly chronological order. In both films, the songs that are played are played in roughly the same order, the quotes that are read are read in roughly the same order, and the stock images used are used in roughly the same order, in the same way, in connection with the same periods of Jimi's life. The similarities between the two films are so remarkable and apparent after even a single viewing that it would be unreasonable for a fact-finder to find that he films were not similar in either form or substance.' The court went on to note there were some differences, but, 'these differences, however, are minor in comparison to the similarities.' The Court said the production of Voodoo Child by Experience Hendrix, 'constitutes inequitable, unconscionable conduct.' In the end, the Court grants Alan Douglas complete and release both the book and film Room Full of Mirrors, with the Court providing royal-free use of Hendrix music and any images controlled by Douglas in completion of the project. Douglas will also be allowed to retain 100% of the gross profits (the original 1995 settlement called for a 50/50 split). Previews for Roomful of Mirrors (aka Starting at Zero) are posted on the YouTube via the Gravity website. It's there, you'll find: Preview #1 (1:30) Jimi in his own words on childhood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IfzrGCqin8&list=UUzOCPXGb108F54AssHonV8Q&index=1 Preview #2 (1:13) 'Voodoo Child' video montage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8R1jiqsWdE&list=UUzOCPXGb108F54AssHonV8Q Preview #3 (1:10) Jimi on Muddy Waters & Chuck Berry influences http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02rvVE-ZC54&list=UUzOCPXGb108F54AssHonV8Q As a sidebar, Douglas has never completely left the Hendrix spirit. In 1995, his Gravity label released Revenge: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix a compilation of covers by various artists including Iggy Pop, Rickie Lee Jones, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Ben Harper, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Shamen, Living Colour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker, Frank Zappa, Rod Steward, the Gil Evans Orchestra and Triad. I n 1998, Douglas commissioned three New York jazz pianists to produce an avant garde project Three Pianos For Jimi demonstrating Hendrix compositions cannot be confined by musical boundaries with intepretations of eight Hendrix songs for his Gravity label. Operating out of France, Douglas has continued to operate Gravity Limited. The company website (www.gravityworld.tv) description notes they 'produce and distribute classic music performances from the 1960s, 70s, & 80s Available at the iTunes store, on CD, and on DVD. They offer DVDs from Muddy Waters (Live At Chicagofest), John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band (Live in Toronto '67), B.B. King (Live in Africa '74), Chuck Berry (Live at the Toronto Peace Festival 1969), Woodstock Diary 1969; as well as product from the Pointer Sisters, The Doors, Rolling Stones and Jerry Lee Lewis. All archival footage from the Douglas vaults. Album releases include his work from legendary jazz musicians Art Blakley, Eric Dolphy, the Modern Jazz Quartet, guitarist John McLaughlin, Funkmaster George Clinton and comedian Lenny Bruce, among others. Hendrix related albums listed include Triad's Three Pianos For Jimi and Timothy Leary's You Can Be Anyone This Time Around. |

People, Hell and Angels Premier Guitar By Andy Ellis If you greet word of a new Jimi Hendrix album with skepticism, you're not alone. Some of the discs that followed his death in September 1970 have been so disappointing that many Hendrix fanatics would rather skip all posthumous releases than hear studio assemblages masquerading as 'new Hendrix music.' (An egregious example of this is 1975's Crash Landing, in which producer Alan Douglas brought in session musicians to replace original rhythm tracks with overdubs. Released in 1995, Voodoo Soup is another such Douglas pastiche.) But here's the good news, at least for guitarists: While People, Hell and Angels isn't a great album'meaning it lacks the coherent sound, vision, and vibe of, say, Axis: Bold as Love'it's packed with magnificent guitar. Jimi is on fire and his Strat sounds crisp and present. His band varies, but mostly Mitch Mitchell or Buddy Miles are on drums with Billy Cox handling the bass. Overall, Jimi's guitar tones are remarkably clean. We hear him playing through cranked low-gain Marshalls, and the mix reveals the details of his masterful technique: We hear the creak and groan of trem springs when he does a trademark dive, we hear his fingers slap the fretboard as he trills and hammers notes, we hear the click of a footswitch as he engages his fuzz or wah. His playing is raw and intense, yet soulful and supple. Kudos to Eddie Kramer, who mixed all 12 songs, for keeping it real. As someone who has gone forward and backward through much of Jimi's recorded work'including a number of excellent concert albums, such as Live at Berkeley and Live at Winterland'I was amazed to hear Hendrix explore new tones and phrasing in People, Hell and Angels. All the moves we know and love are here in spades, but if you listen carefully, you'll also get a fresh perspective on his fretwork. Take 'Somewhere,' for example, recorded in 1968 with Miles on drums and Stephen Stills playing bass. After spewing edgy wah licks across several verses, Hendrix takes an abrupt turn to deliver a clean, melodic solo that's dramatically different from anything I've heard him play. Another of the many highlights is 'Bleeding Heart,' which Hendrix tracked in 1969 during his first-ever session with Miles and Cox. In addition to documenting the mind-meld that gave us Band of Gypsys, it reminds us how Hendrix drew on the late-'50s West Side sound of Chicago masters Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush for his own tripped-out blues. According to the liner notes, all the tracks on People, Hell and Angels are previously unreleased'they're either new songs or different takes of what we've heard before. (We'll let the Hendrix scholars and completists sort out the veracity of this claim.) A few cuts succeed more as curiosities than stellar music'notably 'Let Me Move You,' featuring Lonnie Youngblood, Jimi's old bandleader, on lead vocals and sax'but People, Hell and Angels offers Hendrix freaks many hours of inspired listening. If you're passionate about Jimi's guitar work, this will be a welcome addition to your library. 'Andy Ellis |

ROYAL ALBERT HALL A ROYAL COURT MESS' For years, we've heard rumor of the potential commercial release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 2/24/69. With the permission of Hendrix management at that time, the concert was filmed by producers Gerald 'Jerry' Goldstein and Steve Gold with the intention of producing and distributing a motion picture. Goldstein involvement in music had been as a performer, producer and press agent. He was a member of the Strangeloves, co-authored the hit song 'My Boyfriend's Back' (1963 hit for The Angels), and acted briefly as Hendrix's press agent. In 1969, Goldstein formed a management company with partner Steve Gold, signing Eric Burdon and War. It's said they actually offered Burdon a piece of the Hendrix film in negotiating his signing. With Hendrix's death in 1970, the project was put on hold and has been entangled in legal battles over ownership rights ever since. With Experience Hendrix LLC taking over management of the Hendrix estate in 1995, it opened the door to once again explore the potential final production and theatrical release of the film. After years of legal disputes between the two sides concerning ownership of the rights of the movie and soundtrack, in 2003, Gold and Goldstein came to an agreement with Experience Hendrix, and plans proceeded to edit and release the film and its soundtracks. While the primary footage is from the Royal Albert Hall concert in London, Gold and Goldstein were also allowed to film Experience concerts in Austria, France and Germany that are part of the footage in question. The joint agreement included restoring the nearly 40,000 feet of footage of the concerts, rehearsals and backstage gatherings, and they agreed to find a distributor, according to the lawsuit. Hendrix's estate claims they contributed more than half of the $2 million the project cost. The film was nearing completion in 2005, with its final mix scheduled for October of that year. But then the London Sunday Times got in the way and included a free CD of the concert without permission (It must be noted here that vinyl album versions of some of the Royal Albert Hall material has been released commercially dating back 1971, and with what was believed to be authorized CD releases from the Charly label in 2001. The London Sunday Times claimed they had obtained proper licensing from Charly for their release.). A lawsuit ensued, with the British High Court of Justice in July of 2010 finding in favor of the Hendrix estate and film producers for infringement of intellectual property. The newspaper settled, having to pay out $5.8-million in damages. That put a temporary halt on the film's potential release, indicating the market for the product had been damaged. The death of Steve Gold then threw another wrench in the proceedings, as the film's ownership became entangled in the Gold estate. In September 2010, Sony made a final offer that the Hendrix heirs accepted, but which Goldstein turned down because the distributor was only proposing to screen the film in six theaters, according to court papers submitted by both sides. The Hendrix heirs allege that Goldstein's decision was unfair because Sony's was the only distribution offer the two sides could get. In May of last year, Experience Hendrix LLC filed suit against seeking action over their 2003 agreement. Their suit asks that Goldstein return all money the estate contributed to the film project and requests that the judge declare that the heirs own the movie's soundtrack rights. On January 31 of this year, a judge finalized her tentative ruling allowing Jimi Hendrix's estate to move forward with its $2 million lawsuit the film producers. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Amy Hogue affirmed her tentative ruling handed down on January 29 denying a motion by attorneys for Gerald Goldstein to toss out the case filed by the Hendrix estate in May 2011. Both sides are scheduled to meet with Judge Louis Meisinger, a settlement judge, on to see if the case can be resolved. Trial is scheduled to begin in February, but Hogue said she will delay it if the settlement discussions continue. |
